Which skin symptoms can point to an STI?
Small warts on or around the genitals can point to genital warts. Painful blisters or sores can point to genital herpes. Itching in the pubic hair can point to pubic lice. A painless sore or a rash on the palms and soles can fit syphilis. The same symptoms can also have a harmless, non-sexually transmitted cause; telling them apart is exactly what a dermatologist looks at.
Not every STI is visible on the skin
STIs such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea usually cause no skin complaints, and HIV and hepatitis B cannot be diagnosed from the skin either. A test is needed for those, for example through a GP or a sexual health clinic. A skin assessment does not replace such a test; the dermatologist will tell you honestly when testing is sensible.
