How do you recognise syphilis?
In the first stage a sore develops at the site of infection, usually on the genitals, the anus or in the mouth. The sore is often painless and disappears on its own, but the infection stays. Weeks later a second stage can follow with a mild rash, also on the palms and soles, sometimes with fever or a flu-like feeling.
How do you get syphilis?
Through unprotected sexual contact. Even after the sore has gone, the infection can still be contagious.
Is syphilis dangerous and is treatment needed?
Untreated, syphilis can after years cause damage to the heart and nervous system, among other things. Treatment with antibiotics is effective; the earlier, the better. If you are pregnant, always inform your doctor or midwife. Certainty about syphilis comes from a blood test, for example through a GP or a sexual health clinic.
