The causes vary: irritation, for example from soap, a fungal infection, or another skin condition. Sometimes balanitis is linked to an STI, but usually it is not.

Balanitis is usually harmless. Rinse the glans a few times a day with water only, without soap. If the symptoms do not improve after a few days, treatment is worthwhile; which treatment fits depends on the cause.
