Mole or suspicious spot

Concerned about a mole? Have a dermatologist assess it.

Has a spot changed? Does it look different from your other moles? Or do you keep looking at it?

Upload your photos via the app and have the spot checked by a BIG-registered dermatologist, within 12 to 48 hours. No referral needed, from €39. It does not count towards your Dutch deductible (eigen risico).

When should you have a spot checked?

  • It changes in shape, colour or size.
  • It looks different from your other moles.
  • It itches, bleeds, hurts or does not heal well.
  • It is new and you don't trust it.

The ABCDE method

The ABCDE method can help you check a mole:

AAsymmetry

One half is shaped differently from the other.

BBorder

The border is irregular, ragged or blurred.

CColour

Several colours or shades within one spot.

DDiameter

Larger than 5 mm across.

EEvolution

The spot changes in shape, colour or thickness.

Change is often the most important signal. A smaller spot can also be a reason to have it checked.

How it works.

  1. Upload photos via the app

Take sharp photos of the spot, up close and from a short distance.

  2. Review by a dermatologist

A BIG-registered dermatologist reviews your photos within 12 to 48 hours.

  3. Assessment and a clear next step

You receive the dermatologist's assessment of the spot. Is a physical examination, dermatoscopy or tissue analysis needed? Then the dermatologist tells you exactly what the next step is.

Every review is done by a BIG-registered dermatologist. No algorithm and no assistant: a specialist looks at your photos personally.

Good to know.

Do I need a referral?
No. You start a consultation right away, without a referral from your GP. You can upload at any time of day. Read more about how it works without a referral. Want to know more about waiting times? Read how long you typically wait for a dermatologist in the Netherlands.
What does having a mole checked cost?
A review starts from 39 euros. You pay for the consult yourself, and your health insurance excess stays untouched.
How quickly do I get the result?
Within 12 to 48 hours, depending on the consult you choose. If you want a faster answer, choose a consult with a shorter response time.
What if the spot turns out to be suspicious?
Do the photos show that further examination is needed? Then the dermatologist explains why, and you are referred where necessary for a physical assessment, dermatoscopy or tissue analysis. Only after that can it sometimes be established with certainty what the spot is.
